Why effective communication skills are important for me.

Have you ever had any miscommunication with anyone, be it your friends, family members or even acquaintances? I am sure everyone has encountered this uncomfortable situation at some point in their lives. Misunderstandings and confusions arise and relationships might be affected. We should try our best to prevent any communication breakdown and this is where effective communication skills come into play.

Having effective communication skills are important to me as I will need them to interact with people all the time. In the family, the exchanging of thoughts and feelings among all the family members is very important to keep the family bonded. In the workforce, I need to share ideas and opinions regarding work issues with my fellow colleagues in a competitive environment. The usage of correct channels to pass the message and the proper way of presenting what we intend to say can help to keep communication easy and error free.

I believe that the thoughts which we want to convey to others are an expression of ourselves. With effective communication skills, I can better understand what others want to express and put across what i want to say more successfully as well.

I shall end off with a quote,
Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind.
Rudyard Kipling

  1. Thank you, Jia Min, for this clear, concise post. The examples you give are quite illustrative of the value of these skills. I also like your quote, but it might have been more effective to start with that and build on it in your discussion.

  2. Hi Jiamin,

your post bring up a very interesting point: the thoughts which we want to convey to others are an expression of ourselves. Do you mean that the thoughts we want to convey to others will also reveal our character?

If that is the case, I think being able to express our thoughts in a simple and clear manner is really important as it can create a wrong impression of us in others should there be any misunderstanding or confusion in the messages we convey to others.

Thank you for bringing up this point in your post!

  3. Hello Jiamin! =)

Interesting quote that you used. In addition, I agreed with Xiu Ling of the intersting point you brought up: the thoughts which we want to convey to others are an expression of ourselves. This is indeed a very deeply thought sentence.

In addition, you mentioned effective communication and the different respective roles in life. I feel that it is a great breakdown of the topic.

    Thanks for sharing! =)

  4. Hi Jiamin,

I do agree with you that effective communication skills are important as they help prevent misunderstandings. I feel that not only are they essential in preventing misunderstandings, they are also needed to resolve misunderstandings and stop the dispute from getting worse.

Imagine a situation where 2 pals misunderstood each other and allowed the big confusion to carry on. If they are not able to communicate properly by hearing each other out (eg. the important skill of active listening), their friendship would be deeply affected. They need to express their opinions in an appropriate way in order to seek understanding from each other.

PS: Meaningful quote you have there!

    Thanks for sharing! =).

    To XiuLing and Rebecca:
Yes I believe that the thoughts we want to convey to others will reveal our character. For example, a thoughtful person will not give a hurtful comment as he knows that it will cause others to be upset. On the other hand, a straightforward person tends to be more clear cut in his comments. In any case, there might be exceptions. :) Thanks for reading!
