Final post!

In a blink of an eye, the semester is coming to an end. Looking back at all the activities and assignments we did for ES2007S, I think I have learnt more than what I expected when I bid for this module. I picked ES2007S hoping that I can learn how to write a good resume and I am proud to say I have learnt so much more than expected from Brad such as verbal and non-verbal communication, the 7Cs of writing, active listening, proposal writing, oral presentation and many other important skills such as interviewing, application letter writing etc. I have realized that resume writing is only a small aspect of the job searching process and there are so many areas that we need to improve on.

Initially, I was horrified that we have to blog often as I was apprehensive about posting my thoughts and feelings on a public blog for everyone to see. In addition, I felt that I am quite weak in English and would have difficulties phrasing my sentences. With the help of Geok Ting and my blogging buddy, Zikai, I am more confident of blogging now.

For the project, I learnt how to work in a team and how to communicate effectively with my project mates. Even though there were minor miscommunications, our group always manages to iron out the problems and work hand in hand to get the proposal done. The most interesting part of this project was the interviewing of the managers from the NUS Career Centre. As it was my first attempt at being the interviewer rather than the interviewee, I was nervous. In addition, the manager told us that they were in the process of developing the system that we were proposing. This threw us off guard and we had to come up with questions impromptu. At the beginning of the interview, we felt more like the interviewees. But as the interview progressed, we became more comfortable and they provided many suggestions and advice for both our proposal and our personal future job searches. They were interested in our proposal and requested us for a follow up session. It feels very rewarding that our work is being recognized.

In conclusion, I am glad that I took ES2007S as I have learnt many soft skills which cannot be found in other modules and made so many new friends. :D Last but not the least, thank you Brad, for making ES2007S a fun experience for us. :))

  1. Hi Jia Min,

I'm glad to know that you've learnt so much in ES2007S. Writing more helps you to improve, so you shouldn't be hesitant, or horrified in your case, to do so.

Initially, I thought the conducting an interview would be a great learning process. I was even prepared to throw away my fears but alas, my team did not manage to secure an interview with OSA so I was a little dissapointed.

Hence, I think its great that the Career Centre is interested in your proposal. It goes to show that your team's idea is very much feasible and of course, working on a proposal which has practical applications actually feels much better than working on one just for submission.

All the best for your exams!

  2. Hi Jia Min,

Your post has certainly brought back many memories about the activities we have done for this class.

I think the blogging aspect was the most innovative aspect for this class. Many of my peers in engineering were surprised that blogging was a requirement for this module. Initially, I had the same feelings as you towards blogging. I was not very confident of my command of language and comfortable expressing my thoughts openly on a blog. As the days passed, I realised that the blogging process became very natural and was able to write more freely on this electronic channel. In fact, now I find writing in general (be it report or term paper) a much easier chore than in the past when I used to stare at the screen for more than half an hour, not knowing how to string my thoughts together and pen them down.

Nonetheless, your blogpost highlighted the most important objective for this module: acquisition of soft skills. Through the many activities conducted for this module, I have also learnt many soft skills.

In all, thank you for enriching my learning experience for ES2007s!

  3. Hello Jiamin =)

I think your interview experience sounds very interesting! =) You mentioned that your group felt that you all were the interviewees instead of the interviewers at first. I guess this is because it is one of the very few times we have a chance to interview others in our schoolwork. Coming up with impromptu questions is defnitely a challenge! But, you and your groupmates did well! If I didn’t remember wrongly, they are even interested for a follow-up session.

The blogging experience is indeed a fulfilling one! Like you, I was quite afraid of the workload from the required blog posts. Actually, I enjoyed myself very much from the blogging! This is due to interactions and self-reflections in the blog posts. After taking this course, I would put in more effort to create more topics in my own personal blog with more proper english usage!

Thanks for being ES2007S, you have my experience in this course a joyful and meaningful one!

    Rebecca =)

  4. Hi Jiamin,

Yes the interview session did threw us in a state of shock! I remembered us having to brainstorm a different set of questions to ask during the interview itself. It was indeed a rewarding experience as I had never been so unprepared while conducting an interview before. Thinking back, I do feel that it was fun to have faced such a situation with you. =).

Let's work hard for our papers!

  5. Hi Jiamin,

I still remember what you girls did for your proposal. It was very feasible and well done. I hope that the Career Centre will implement your idea so that I can find a suitable job or internship more effortlessly. :)

I agree that the soft skills that I have acquired from this module cannot be written down simply in black and white. I also learnt how to communicate more effectively, be it with my friends or with my parents.

    See you on the 3rd!

    Regards,
    Kesleen

  6. Geok Ting: Yup! I think the interview process was a brand new learning experience. The managers were very friendly, helpful and even answered our personal questions about job search.

Xiuling, Rebecca, Hazel and Kesleen: Thanks for reading and commenting and see you guys on the 3rd! :)

  7. Thank you, Jia Min, for the accolades in this comprehensive post and for all your hard work. Your reflection is very apt as you demonstrate how, during much of the course, you were working (and communicating) within groups: you mention your blog buddy, the project group and the managers at the Career Centre. I appreciate this focus and your realization that those interactions are really at the core of communication development.

Thank you, too, for being an important member of those interactions. Indeed, it has been a lot of fun working with you and the others.

All the best in your future endeavors, Jia MIn!

  9. An attention-grabbing dialogue is worth comment. I think that it’s best to write extra on this subject, it won’t be a taboo subject however usually individuals are not sufficient to speak on such topics. To the next. Cheers Easter Messages
